Gear

Essential gear for a hiker

Good gear makes the difference between a memorable hike and an uncomfortable one. The good news is you don't need to spend a fortune to get started.

The essentials: hiking footwear with good grip (avoid smooth sneakers), quick-drying clothing, a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, at least 1.5 liters of water, a good trail lunch and your ID.

Highly recommended extras: trekking poles to protect your knees on descents, a cap and a versatile buff for the sun and the mountain cold.

What to leave behind: don't overpack. A light, well-organized backpack is your best ally on the trail.
